Why the Catholic Church Opposes 'In Vitro Fertilization'

Since the birth of the first "test-tube baby" in 1978, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has provided hope and a path to parenthood for many couples who cannot conceive naturally. The Catholic Church, however, has consistently rejected IVF - not out of hostility to suffering couples, but because of deeper beliefs about marriage, human life, and the dignity of the human person. The Church opposes IVF largely because the process usually creates multiple embryos in a laboratory. Some are implanted, but others are frozen, discarded, or destroyed. Since the Church views each embryo as a human life, this loss of embryos is considered morally unacceptable.
